You might be thinking of the BarX. They are on 2nd south between 2nd and 3rd east. It used to be a dive bar with dodgy wiring (I actually got an electric shock there one time) and a "volunteer" bouncer who had done hard time in prison. I haven't been there for ages but it looks like they have a full liquor license now and are somewhat less dive-y.

There used to be a very tiny dive bar downtown somewhere , they served a huge mug of draft beer and called it the

Do you know the name of that dive bar, by chance?

Thank you so much for this!

Looking to possibly relocate to SLC from the pacific northwest - We are thrilled by the idea of living in Utah, but our main concern was the craft beer scene. This list definitely eased my conscience a bit, the upward trend of craft beer in SLC is something to look forward to!!

Still no mention of 2-Row which is easily one of the best breweries in the state. They don't have a tasting room (yet) but they offer ber to go at their brewhouse. They make several fantastic IPAs, a great barrel aged stout, the occasional special release sour, and several others.

And no mention of The Bayou as a place that has an extensive beer menu? I think they have the biggest beer menu of all the places you listed.

Thanks for helping to make my tech conference trip (and first visit) to Salt Lake City full of terrific craft beer memories. During my week I managed to enjoy a pint at Squatters, Proper (with their delicious proper burgers), Epic, Red Rock, and Fishers. Plus Uinta cans at the conference party. I wish I had more time to try them all!

A few tips to add to your thorough travel post. Due to the stricter laws in Utah regarding serving alcoholic beverages, I was surprised by several things. First is that breweries must charge a fee to serve you a sample. So if you like to taste a one or two before you order, it will cost you 50 cents or even $1 per sample. Upon entering a brewery pub I was required to show photo ID despite the fact that I'm over 40. I was also informed that some places require you to order food with your drink which was the case at Epic, though they do have a convenient beer bottle shop to take it back to your hotel. Finally all the craft beer on tap was supposed to be under 4% ABV (percent alcohol content) by law which has an upside - you can drink more pints without feeling it! :)

Cheers...

Toasted Barrel Brewery will be opening in the next two months, focusing on Barrel aged sours with a Belgian influence. These beers take time, lots of time to mature, so there will be plenty of other offerings upon opening. Visitors will be able to walk through the barrel room, as well as plenty of windows to the brewhouse.
